Complete guide to India's 6-digit Postal Index Number — structure, zones & how to find yours
A PIN code (Postal Index Number) is a 6-digit numeric code used by India Post to identify every post office and delivery region across India. Introduced on 15 August 1972 by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar (then Additional Secretary, Ministry of Communications), the system was designed to enable fast, language-neutral sorting of mail across India's vast and linguistically diverse geography.
India has 9 postal zones. Every post office — from a major city hub to a remote village branch — has a unique PIN code that helps both humans and automated systems route mail accurately and efficiently.
